Olympia Koziaris has gathered the previously untold and unpublished histories of the Greek residents of Yarraville: their work, lives and pastimes across a seventy year period, beginning in the 1950s and reaching up to the present day. Working with aged care residents and their families as well as reaching out to the broader Greek-Australian community, Olympia shares the hardships, successes, griefs and joys that accompanied the immigrants who made Yarraville home, enriching our cultural heritage and changing their local community and the country they came to forever. Read firsthand the stories of acclaimed film director Ana Kokkinos, Peter Yiannoudes and the Sun Theatre, Rosie Didolis and her Bomboniere shop, Andrew’s Butchers and their award winning hams, international heavy weight wrestling champion Alex Iakovidis, poet George Athanasious, and Sergeant Calliope Kwas, Victoria Police’s first Greek woman police officer. Recall the flavours of the beloved Malamas Cake Shop and revel in the successes of the Doxa (now Glory) soccer team, one of the first in Melboune’s West as you learn more about the Greek-Australians and their families who found their place as the school teachers, librarians, restauranteurs and shopkeepers of Yarraville.
