Description
Sleeper cutters come in all shapes and sizes, but the ability to cut a perfect sleeper was quite rare. Some cutters could produce sleepers looking like they had been planed and were perfect in shape and size. A cutter’s life was hard, The timber was quite often contrary, the weather awful and the inspector tough. Whiter has covered the life, conditions and actual work very thoroughly, showing all aspects of the industry, from felling the tree to shipping the sleepers to their final destination, sometimes to foreign destinations.
in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s it is claimed that there were approximately three hundred sleeper cutter licenses held in the Eden area. They made a large proportion of the working population and contributed to a considerable proportion of the history of Eden and the surrounding area.
