SECOND HAND BOOK
This text was first written as an environmental history for the Wellington Shire Heritage Study…The themes begin with European discovery of the coastline, occupation by squatters, and the impact of settlement on the Indigenous people. They also include how farming landscapes developed, government land settlement schemes and the impact of mining on the shire. A significant theme is the history of the timber industry in the shire: logging and milling red gum on the central plains, mountain ash in the Strzeleckis, yellow stringy bark in the Mullungdung forest, and penetrating isolated alpine areas in the postwar years to log alpine ash. Reflecting the shire’s increasing population, themes’ such as developing transport networks and building settlements and towns become important, as do governing and administering the region and providing vital services such as health and education.
But the aim of the book is not just to provide a background history on how the landscapes have evolved. It is also to identify some of the many sites that remain and to document their history…
Knowing the history and significance of the sites helps us to understand more of the landscapes around us…
