Description
Second hand book
Since its formation in 1853 the story of the Victoria Police has been interwoven with Victorian social and political history. Following the amalgamation of seven separate and distinct police agencies in the colony, the resultant unified body was the first of its kind in Australia. Many events have shaped its development: the gold rushes, the Clunes riot, the Kelly outbreak, the maritime strikes, the coming of the motor car, the police strike, both world wars and the Vietnam war protests, the gangland wars, Black Saturday bushfires and the use of DNA to solve crimes all formed part of this mosaic. This is the second edition of this book.
Robert Haldane (1952–2020) served in the Victoria Police Force for almost thirty-four years, retiring at the rank of superintendent in August 2001. In addition to extensive operational experience as a uniformed officer and detective, his police career included positions as a staff officer, industrial relations officer, research officer and editor of the Victoria Police news magazine Police Life. In the world after the force, Robert was involved in regional development and was deputy mayor of East Gippsland Shire Council. A historian and author, he was also a food reviewer and contributor to lifestyle magazines and history journals. The People’s Force is based on his PhD thesis.
