THE OTWAYS by TREVOR PRESCOTT (Second Hand Book)

SECOND HAND BOOK

THE OTWAY RANGES contain a wealth of treasures. They are renowned for their forests of commercial timber. They support a rich diversity of flora and fauna including some species, like the quaint little ” White shrimp,” which are found virtually nowhere else in the world. They contain some of the richest farmland in Victoria, and some of the State’s loveliest scenery. And, as if all this were not enough, they can also lay claim to having provided the background to some of Australia’s most exciting historic stories. The explorers Gellibrand and Hesse disappeared mysteriously here in 1837 and were never seen again; and it was here, too, that the convict William Buckley made his daring escape, managing to survive in the wild for years before he was discovered.

Yet the Otways also have their tragedies, as Trevor Pescott points out in this book. The ranges have been largely ignored as a nature -conservation area, and many of their plant and animal species are in danger of extinction. Their timbered slopes have all too often been unwisely cleared to provide land for farming, and erosion and bushfires have hastened their ravagement.

Trevor Pescott gives a superb portrait of this threatened area. His informative text provides a fascinating collection of facts about the Otways, with particular emphasis on their flora and fauna, while his beautiful photographs in both colour and black- and – white form a perfect complement.
