SECOND HAND BOOK
Antoine Fauchery was a glittering figure in the Bohemian circles of Europe – an artist, writer and adventurer; Richard Daintree was an English geologist. Both had become interested in the magical new science of photography, and in 1858, for differing reasons, they both found themselves in the raw young city of Melbourne.
So arose the collaboration which led to the SUN PICTURES OF VICTORIA, the first photographic collection depictingMelbourne and the Colony of Victoria.
Using the primitive wet-plate method of the time, they photographed Melbourne’s streets, its magnificent new buildings and leading figures; the noted beauty spots and towns of the country; the goldfields and diggers; and the Aboriginals, some still living in their traditional style, and others clad in nineteenth century European dress.
In Fauchery’s own words, “There are some of great men, some of towns, some of the mines, some of the savages. There is a little of everything.
SUN PICTURES has saved something of this vanished and rarely-photographed era. The thoroughly-researched text by Dianne Reilly and Jennifer Carew enhances the photographs, providing a fascinating insight into the impact photography made on the nineteenth century public, outlining the evolution of photography, the backgrounds of Fauchery and Daintree, and the particular historic context of each photograph.
