James Austin (1810-1896) was born in England and traveled to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) in 1832 with other members of his family. In 1837 he and a younger brother, Thomas, crossed over to Australia at the future site of Geelong where he became a successful businessman and the second mayor of Geelong. James married Rebecca Savage in 1842. They were the parents of nine children. He and his immediate family returned to England in 1853 where he lived for the rest of his life. Descendants of James and his brothers and sisters reside in England, Australia and Tasmania.
