Description
This book brings together much of what is known of the place names of Portland and the Glenelg Shire of Victoria. It tells us the story of the names – and the story of those who named the coastline and the countryside of Victoria’s South West.
The region’s names came from the indigenous people, British and French mar4itime explorers, early pioneers, explorer Major Mitchell and a combination of squatters, settlers, surveyors and selectors. Their efforts have left the Glenelg Shire with a rich and colourful array of commemorative, descriptive, nostalgic and indigenous place names.
