Pharmacy Families: Henry Francis in Australia 1849 – 1999 by David and Kathleen E. Sharpe (Second hand)

SECOND HAND

Pharmacy ownership frequently runs in families. The Henry Francis business is one such case, where Henry was followed by son George, David Cossar followed by son Norman, who in turn handed over to his son Brian. The original owner, Samuel Croad has a pharmacist descendant practicing in Williamstown, Victoria. The owners and partners all made a significant contribution, not only to a well respected business, but to the wider field of pharmacy in Australia.

This is the history of a pharmacy begun in Melbourne before Victoria became a State in its own right and before the rush for gold occurred. One hundred and fifty years on, Henry Francis Chemist remains a well known Melbourne City pharmacy. The intervening years saw the establishment of 29 branches, some accommodated in Myers stores and shopping centres across south and eastern Australia.

The book traces the ups and downs of this business, set in the context of Australian history and the development and continuously changing pharmaceutical world. The many personal details and snippets add to its appeal. It will be of interest to those who value the recording of our past, to pharmacists and others, especially to the people who had a connection to Henry Francis Chemists.
