SECOND HAND BOOK
Montmorency, for many, is still a hidden part of Melbourne. But for those who know it, the trees, the winding streets, hilly terrain, remnant bushland and Were Street with its environs, the suburb has a special appeal.
Maureen Jones has a long association with the district. Having raised her family with her first husband in Montmorency, she moved to the country for twenty years before returning home there with a fresh appreciation of what the area offers. As she began her research she was surprised to find that little had been written about Montmorency’s development and she offers this account as her tribute to this special place.
Montmorency: The farm on the Plenty lays out the history of Montmorency from its earliest years as a hunting ground for the Wurundjeri willam people, through its uptake by white settlers. Ownership of the land remained in the hands of one family for four generations spanning seventy years, before the land evolved through small farmlets into the suburb we know and treasure.
Using official land records, genealogical and local history resources, it has been possible to piece together the stages of growth of this suburb and the people who influenced its growth. By adding memories, anecdotes, photographs, and newspaper cuttings a fuller picture emerges.
This book is a tribute to the Wurundjeri willam people, our pioneers and especially our residents, both young and old who have shared their knowledge and love of this place.
