Harvester City: The making of multicultural Sunshine, 1939-1975 By Olwen Ford

A more than local history, Harvester City: the making of multicultural Sunshine 1939-1975, shows Sunshine and district at the heart of Australia’s great changes in immigration and industrialisation. The book begins in wartime, when Sunshine-Deer Park-Maribyrnong were Australia’s leading munitions area, but focuses on the post-war migration years when thousands of young immigrants settled in the new City of Sunshine, bought land, built homes, had families and worked in the area’s important industries.

Their stories and ‘photo-stories’ tell of hardships and achievements, while extracts from local newspapers, government archives and census data highlight the challenges for the host community and the complex nature of this very diverse population. By the early 1970s, ‘Harvester City’ was leading the nation in terms of gaining federal grants for urgently needed projects but faced new crises. Multicultural Sunshine was very much a city of contradictions and contrasts.
