Description
The discovery of Western Port by George Bass in 1798 marks the beginning of the recorded history of Victoria. It is remarkable that, despite the importance of the event, there has never been any detailed examination or reconstruction of the thirteen days which Bass spent in Western Port. In this volume, originally a paper presented to the Bass Valley Historical Society in 1997, the author attempts to reconstruct the thirteen days which Bass spent in Western Port and answer questions such as where did he actually go, why did he not discover French Island, and how authentic are some of the local legends associated with his name?
