Bullies, Bookies and Booze Edited by Tony Pagliaro

Bullies, Bookies, and Booze: The short life of a policeman, an autobiography by Owen Roberts Edited with an introduction by Tony Pagliaro

The memories of a man from the bush, a shearer who turned policeman in 1914, they were written in 1972-73 when Owen Roberts decided, at more than eighty years, to set down the many dramatic and comic adventures experienced during his short life since 1891. The youngest of a family of six, Owen Roberts was born in 1891 on the night of his fathers funeral. At the age of eleven years, Owen started his first job, one of many which covered the whole range of bush experience. When he joined the police force in 1914, he found that a large part of his work involved policing licensing and gambling laws. it seems natural that the wily publicans put a lot of effort into satisfying their thirsty customers and just as much into evading prosecution. Many battles of wits ensued. Roberts joined the fray with enthusiasm which was rewarded when, after working in Ballarat for eighteen years, he was promoted to the Melbourne-based licensing squad in 1932.
