Description
This is a companion book to Bill Fleming’s book Edinburgh to Mia Mia on the life of our pioneer ancestors Robert and Janet Fleming. Robert and Janet, from Edinburgh, had arrived in Van Diemen’s Land in 1830, then in the Port Phillip District in 1836, and William and Catherine Weir from Glasgow, followed in 1855. A close friendship was formed between the two families, with the men working together in the butchers’ trade. In the 1860s, three Fleming siblings married three Weir siblings, tying the families even closer forever.
Beyond Mia Mia is a compilation of the lives of Robert and Janet’s five surviving children, including their grandchildren and great grandchildren. It documents the names, dates and places of them all. Brief notes about their lives, and those of the families they married into, follow the development of the suburbs of Brunswick, Ascot Vale and Flemington, in the new colony of Victoria. This book is more of a reference volume of the ancestors, to be used by future generations, wanting to find out who went before.
