The Kulin Nation’s presence over millennia around Port Phillip Bay, the Birrarung/Yarra corridor, its waterways, swamps and creeks, was clearly a primary formative element in the maritime heritage we share today. The MMHN is curating this event to acknowledge the genesis of this shared maritime heritage which is little understood and a source of wonder. It is particularly topical at this time of the year (i.e., post Australia/Invasion Day) as we all reflect on our shared heritage.

Following the 5pm MMHN AGM, at 6pm the illustrious Patron of MMHN, Dr. Kevin Fewster, will speak on ‘Charting a course - reflections on 35 years at the helm' during his extraordinary 35 year international career in Maritime Museums including Director of Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG), the world’s largest and most visited maritime museum precinct.  

Closer to ‘home’, Kevin was the founding Director of the South Australian Maritime Museum; Director of the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) and of the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. Kevin will reflect on what are essential elements to consider in a successful maritime museum today and the issues that face such cultural institutions.

Melbourne Maritime Heritage Network: Presentation on 2024 International Congress on Maritime Museums Conference

Jackie Watts will deliver an informal presentation on her short paper, entitled: “Capturing the past to inform the future”, and a discussion on issues arising from the 2024 International Congress on Maritime Museums conference. Worldwide, it seems that, regardless of assets, infrastructure or funding, many museums are dealing with emerging issues and struggling for relevance. The 2024 Conference of the ICMM, held in Netherlands and Belgium, has just ended and Jackie Watts, inaugural Chair of the Melbourne Maritime Heritage Network Board, was a speaker at the conference, delivering  the above paper.
