The Royal Historical Society of Victoria welcomes the celebrations of NAIDOC week 7-14 July. The theme for this year is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud!’ which celebrates the importance of cultural resilience and identity among First Nations communities across Australia.
This theme is important in this year of the Yoorrook truth-telling Royal Commission, which has allowed First Nations Victorians to speak of the ongoing impact of colonisation. To learn more visit Home – Yoorrook Justice Commission
NAIDOC Week is a time for all Australians to learn more about Indigenous history. The RHSV is promoting this in a small way, with one of its six distinguished annual lectures being the annual Billibellary Indigenous History lecture, which is published in the Victorian Historical Journal. The cataloguing of our collection is now paying more attention to diversity in our collections, and articles published in the VHJ on occasion focus on Aboriginal history.
