Jean Rebecca Elliott (1867-1945)

Jean Rebecca Elliott (1867-1945) HSV member

Jean Elliott joined the HSV in November 1934. This was Victoria’s centenary year.

It is likely that she had an interest in Victorian history as her ancestors on both sides of her family were early pioneers.

Her mother Annie Hamilton Mouat was born in Hobart in 1838 and was brought to Port Phillip the same year. In 1866 she married James Stevens. He had arrived with his parents in 1849. The family spent some time on the goldfields near Bendigo and James later became a teacher.

Jean Elliott provided information on the women of her family for the Records of the Pioneer Women of Victoria which was published in 1937.

Jean Stevens was born in Eaglehawk in 1876. She married Robert George Elliott – an engine fitter in 1900 and lived at 79 Cassells Road Brunswick. In about 1930 the street numbering was changed and the address became 51 Cassells Road. Jean lived there until her death in 1945.

A daughter, Jean Myrtle Elliott was born in 1901. She became a teacher and married Ralph James Baxter in 1932. Jean Baxter died in Portland in 1980.
