Reel History: A Journey Through Victoria’s Cinematic Past

February 25 @ 6:30 pm

Step into the golden age of cinema at the PMI Victorian History Library’s immersive film evening, presented by the Cinema and Theatre Historical Society (CATHS). This captivating event will transport you back to the early days of film in Victoria, showcasing the state’s pivotal role in Australia’s cinematic history.

Experience the magic of Australia’s first feature-length film, “The Story of the Kelly Gang” (1906), and witness the evolution of our local film industry. From the first film screening in Melbourne in 1896 to the groundbreaking developments of the 1920s, you’ll be treated to a curated selection of rare footage and pioneering works that shaped our cultural landscape.

This is your chance to see how Victoria led the way in early filmmaking, from the Salvation Army’s unexpected involvement to the introduction of Australia’s own sound system. Join us for an evening of nostalgia, discovery, and period appropriate movie snacks at the PMI Victorian History Library.
