Immigrant Women in the Age of Elegance: A lecture by Dr Liz Rushen AM

April 26, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

$25

During the 1830s and 1840s, thousands of women were encouraged to migrate to the Australian colonies. Liz will describe how they managed the translocation process and created settled, sometimes elegant, lives for themselves in what were often frontier homes.

Dr Liz Rushen AM is on the Editorial Board of the Australian Dictionary of Biography, and a Research Associate in the Faculty of Arts, Monash University. A former Executive Director of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and former Chair of the History Council of Victoria, Liz is widely published in the field of migration history, women in colonial Australia and the social history of the Port Phillip District (Victoria). Her latest book is Garryowen Unmasked: the life of Edmund Finn (Anchor Books Australia, 2022). In 2021, Liz was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to community history and heritage preservation.
