Professor John Riddoch Poynter AO

We invite the family, friends, colleagues and students of Professor Poynter and the members of the RHSV to join us in this celebration.
John Poynter in a long, illustrious career has made a major contribution to historical studies in Australia, and particularly to the history of Melbourne and Victoria through his outstanding biographical writing.
Amongst his many career achievements are:

- Victorian Rhodes Scholar 1951
- Oxford University MA
- Chevalier des Palmes Academiques 1980
- Dean of Trinity College, University of Melbourne 1953-64
- Ernest Scott Professor of History, University of Melbourne 1966-75
- Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Melbourne 1971-73
- Dean of the Faculty of Music, Visual and Performing Arts 1991-93
- Pro Vice Chancellor 1972-75, Deputy Vice-Chancellor 1975-90, Assistant Vice-Chancellor 1991-94
- Section Editor, Australian Dictionary of Biography 1978-90
- President, Citizens Welfare Service 1972-91
His books include the biographies of Russell Grimwade, Alfred Felton, Alexander Leeper and Dr L.L.Smith. With Carolyn Rasmussen he co-authored a history of the University of Melbourne 1935-75. In 2009 he published a collection of verses and memoirs entitled The Tarnished Swan.
