GS-SH-02; Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS 'Ark Royal'; There have been five Royal Navy ships called 'Ark Royal'. The ship in this image is the third of the line and was an aircraft carrier. The keel was laid in 1935 and the ship was launched in 1937. During World War 2 the ship served in the Atlantic, in Norwegian waters, and in the Mediterranean. Finally, in November 1941, while returning from Malta to Gibraltar 'Ark Royal' was torpedoed by a U-boat. Despite frantic efforts to save the ship it finally capsized and sank, fortunately with only one fatality, a seaman killed in the initial torpedo strike.

GS-USM-04; First balloon flight across the English Channel in 1785; On 7th January 1785, Frenchman Jean Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries set off from Dover in an attempt to fly across the English Channel in a hydrogen-filled balloon. They crossed the French coast after a flight of two hours during which they had to throw overboard everything movable in the balloon basket (including much of their clothing) to stay aloft. They landed in trees in the Foret de Felmores, near Guines, about 10 km inland from Calais. Thus ended the first manned oversea flight.
