This image is attributed to Everard Studley Miller who photographed many graves and tombstones in the Old Melbourne Cemetery (established in 1837) around 1920 as part of a project led by Isaac Selby to record and commemorate all aspects of Melbourne's second cemetery (the first being at Flagstaff Hill). The RHSV holds original glass negatives and albums of the photographs from this project.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. Typed label on slide: Old Melbourne Cemetery. The Jackson Obelisk. Builder of Toorak House.

GS-USM-02; First balloon ascent in England, 1784; The first balloon ascent in Britain was made by Vincent Lunardi on 15th September 1784 from the training grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company at Moorfields in London. His balloon was filled with hydrogen and he took with him a cat, a dog, a pigeon in a cage, a bottle of wine and a cold chicken. His flight lasted for two hours and fifteen minutes. Lunardi and all the livestock survived the flight.

P-79-Pi; John Alsop : State Savings Bank, 1915.; Vandyck Studio (Firm); Framed portrait of John Alsop (c. 1839-1925).
"John Alsop, one of the pioneers of the Victorian State Savings Bank. Mr. Alsop was born in Derbyshire, England, 86 years ago, and came to Australia with his parents in 1849. ' He lived for five years in Adelaide, and then came to Melbourne, where he entered the service, of the State Savings Bank. For more than 50 years he remained in the bank, and filled many important positions. He rose to the position of actuary and trustee manager, and he held this position at the time of his retirement, 21 years ago."
