GS-BCS-9; Exhibition Building, Melbourne : illuminated for Federal celebrations, 1901; This photograph of the Exhibition Building was taken at night from the south-east, to show the lights decorating the architectural features of the building. The illuminations are reflected in the ornamental lake.

Selby gave a lecture on "Melbourne Exhibitions" on August 10th, 1932 at the public library. He also spoke at Independent Hall, Collins Street, on "Great Exhibitions of the World - with a plea for one at the Centenary of Victoria", July 5th 1949. He also gave a lecture titled, 'The Pageant of Federation', at the Assembly Hall, Collins Street, on July 2nd, 1951.

GS-BCS-31; Treasury Building, Spring Street, Melbourne, c. 1901; This photograph of the Treasury Building, located on the east side of Spring Street, between Treasury Place and MacArthur Street and facing down Collins Street, has been taken from slightly to the north and the other side of Spring Street.
Constructed between 1858 and 1862, the Treasury was the first major government office built after the gold rushes. It was designed in the Renaissance Revival style by J.J. Clark, who was eighteen years old at the time! In 1876, Treasury moved to the State Government Offices nearby, and the Old Treasury building became the office of the governor and the chief secretary.

GS-BCS-55; Government House, Melbourne, c. 1900; This is a typical view of Government House, the home of the Governor of Victoria, taken from the east with the belvedere tower in the centre of the image. Designed in the Victorian Period Italianate style by William Wardell, it was opened in 1876. Government House and its grounds are located next to the Royal Botanic Gardens.
A couple of figures and a hansom cab can be seen at the entrance portico to the left of the building. The plantings around the building are not as established as in GS-BCS-14, and so this slide has been given an earlier date.

GS-BCS-58; Law Courts (Supreme Court), William Street, Melbourne, c. 1898; This image of the front façade of the Supreme Court of Victoria building, which is located on the east side of William Street between Little Bourke Street and Lonsdale Street, has been viewed from the opposite side of William Street.
The building was constructed between 1874 and 1884 in the Renaissance Revival style. The architects were Alfred Louis Smith and Arthur Ebden Johnson.
An unusual, twice life size, bronze figure of Lady Justice can be seen above the entrance to the court on the left of the image. The dome delivers light to the Supreme Court Library.

GS-BCS-67; Town Hall, Swanston Street, Melbourne, c. 1900; Cooper & Co (firm); This photograph of Melbourne Town Hall, located on the north-east corner of Swanston and Collins streets, has been taken from the opposite corner of the intersection.
This grand building, opened in 1870, was designed by Joseph Reed in the French Second Empire style. The portico on the left of the image was added in 1887.
There are not many people around at this usually busy intersection on this winter's day. A hansom cab waits at the curb on Collins Street.

The first depicts the Point Hicks lighthouse on the coastal headland in the East Gippsland region of Victoria. This image shows the rough sea as it crashes on the rocks. The lighthouse stands on a slope in the background. A ship 'Cape Everard' is in the foreground.
Point Hicks or Tolywiarar was formerly called Cape Everard. The lighthouse was built on the point during 1887 and 1888 and commenced operation in 1890.
The second shows the owner's notations.

GS-EV-32; Liardet's Market reserve, showing Lamb Inn and portion of Batman's house on Yarra River, c. 1840; Liardet, Wilbraham Frederick Evelyn, 1799-1878; Glass slide of a watercolour by Liardet that depicts the settlement on the Yarra River in Melbourne. John Batman's house and the Lamb Inn are among the buildings in the background. There is an adjoining vacant block of land, with only tree stumps. Two vessels and the Yarra River are in the foreground. Several workers are loading cargo on a horse-drawn cart. There is also a second horse-drawn already fully loaded.

GS-EV-39; Richmond House. S.G. Henty's House, and Henty's old plough; Glass slide that depicts Stephen George Henty's home in Portland and the plough that turned the first furrows, December 6, 1834.
There are a group of men and women outside the building and it is in a garden setting. The plough is a commemoration plaque in memory of the first soil ploughed in Victoria.

GS EV 44; Railway Pier [Station Pier], Port Melbourne, c. 1875 ; Glass slide of a photograph of Station Pier in Port Melbourne (Sandridge). In this view looking down the pier, there are ships tied up at the pier. Buildings are in the forefront and to the right are rail lines.
Railway Pier was built to give shipping access to the first railway in Australia in 1854. Station Pier was built in 1924-30 on a slightly different angle.
