GS-TM-09; Old Melbourne Cemetery : plan, c. 1920; This is an image of a paper plan that was enlarged, folded and stuck into the back of Selby's "The Old Pioneers' Memorial History of Melbourne", published in 1924.
The "Plan of the Old Melbourne Cemetery (See Index to Memorial Graves)", enabled readers to find the locations of the pioneers' graves within the cemetery. The areas where different denominations are buried are depicted, as well as known individual graves. Unfortunately, by the time the book was published, the graves had been relocated and the cemetery site included in the expansion of the nearby market.
The plan shows, on the right, how an earlier expansion of the market had covered sections of the Old Cemetery. This image has been slightly cropped from the original; Franklin Street is to the left. Selby may have based his plan on two previous cemetery surveys in 1873 and 1918 prepared by Melbourne City Council, and included his own research. However, he did not use the council's numbering system creating his own for his book.
Selby was instrumental in organising a campaign against the market's expansion and the relocation of the remaining pioneer graves.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. Selby numbered this slide #14.
