About this objectThe area of Oxley's Plains and Forest was discovered and named by the explorers Hume and Hovell in 1824. Now, almost two centuries later, About a Mile Away aims to capture the rich heritage of the area as recorded by some fifty contributors, many of them descendants of the pioneers who settled in the area ... For those who are interested in Australia's rich and varied history, About a Mile Away looks not only at those first hardy settlers who purchased land at the first government land sales in the 1850s, but also at the many others who have lived and worked in this area. About a Mile Away examines the multicultural immigrants who arrived in the mid-1900s and who were prominent tobacco growers, as well as early developments in places like Bobinawarrah, Carboor, Meadow Creek, Markwood, Milawa, Oxley and Oxley Flats, and a detailed record of soldiers who served in the First World War. About a Mile Away is the result of a project undertaken by the Milawa Heritage Group.
