Includes copy of journal by Edward Cornell of a voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne on the ship 'Red Jacket', 1856; notes on the Cornell brothers in Australia; copies of personal documents of Cornell family include extracts of marriage and death certificates, copy of a Register of Early Colonists, business papers, plans of houses and premises, ships 'Red Jacket', 'Lightning' and 'White Star'; miscellaneous copies of letters between brothers relate to life in Melbourne in 1850s in business and merchandising (Madeline House) and experiences at New Caledonia Diggings.
In the 1860s the brother opened drapery stories in Drummond street, Commercial Road, and Lonsdale Street [site of Myer building]. Frederick Cornell set up as photographer.
