Name/TitleTraralgon local history
About this objectBrief history of Traralgon and its development as a principal town of South Gippsland from its beginnings in 1839.
The first page is a covering letter from the author to Councilor Pettit, Shire President. The author suggests his initial research started with the names listed in the Education Gazette of 19 September 1918.
Includes reference to the original landscape, Aboriginal clans, the Kurnai and chief Merriman, the small number of Aboriginal people left and their movements through the area. The author includes physical descriptions of Chief Merriman, from a meeting with him in 1862, and another of King Billy from a meeting and visit to a circus at Westernport in 1876. There is mention of what the author describes as the last corroboree at Maffra.
The history then covers Rosedale squatting runs adjoining Traralgon, the early pioneers who followed Angus McMillan, the legal and Parliamentary chaos re land laws, the mines, gold and mineral discoveries in the Walhalla area and general description of the development of the township of Traralgon.
The history finishes with a short chronology.
