Family correspondence, 1851-1960, describes personal and social life as well as some commentary on the prevailing economic, political and cultural conditions; references to depressions in 1890s and 1930s and economic developments after World War II; political policies and personalities from the time of La Trobe until the Menzies era with discussion of the 1860s land controversy, European unrest in the 1930s and the cold war mentality of the 1950s; personal experiences of the Boer War, World War I and World War II with details of trench warfare in France, American troops in Melbourne, bombings, economic repercussion in Australia (especially for primary industry) and treatment of Prisoners of War [P.O.W.s]; references to White Australia, immigration, population, women's changing roles, football and cricket matches, the spreading suburbia (especially Bayswater), decline in religious beliefs and broadly based philosophical opinions on Australia's future. Business correspondence and legal documents relate to property and livestock sales, especially Mount Koroite, Rocklands and Winninburn, family estates, loans and investments - primary industry in particular. Also includes a brief history of the Turnbulls in Tasmania and the role played by Dr Adam Turnbull in the cessation of transportation, and life at Ivy Cottage, Campbell Town and Winton.
Other family papers include Albert Glendinning Turnbull's personal papers - grazing licences, letters, business papers (and household management), will, memorabilia (visiting cards, show prizes for horse breeding, herd testing cards, telegrams, notes on sermons, and addresses, poetry, plays and short story which reflect his philosophical and political outlook); original diary and account of a trip to New Zealand by Alexander Turnbull, 1864 entitled "Jottings from my rambles" (accompanied by his brother-in-law, Harry Smith): this is essentially a description of the journey from Western District to Melbourne, a brief visit to Tasmania, his voyage on the 'Claude Hamilton' ['Claud Hamilton'] to N.Z. for the purpose of buying larger tracts of land - a most interesting account; shearing record for 1869, and 1858 account book; original diary and transcripts for the period 1865-66 and 1872-1886 provide a record of daily events in a rural environment with particular references to sheep-farming and involvement with the Presbyterian Church; extracts from a diary 1870-71 re domestic life (perhaps Jessie Turnbull, nee Cairns, Alexander Turnbull's first wife); original diaries, and transcribed extracts of Rev. James Henderson, 1860-1875, voyage to Australia, ministerial work near Ballarat and the Western District and family life; papers re estate of Dr Adam Turnbull and his wife, Margaret Turnbull, and notes on purchase of Mount Koroite in 1845 from James Robertson and later disputes over the property.,
Early records of the Western District include extracts from John Mackersey's diaries of 1857-1870; Samuel Carter's reminiscences (Black Protector at Glenisla); diary of John MacIntosh; James S. McPherson's reminiscences; and biographical notes on Rev. Ernest George Petherick, Father Michael Farrelly and Samuel and William Jackson (by A. S. Kenyon with details of Samuel Jackson's architectural work); and transcribed reminiscences of Mrs Crouch (nee Trangmar) on life at Portland.,These records provide invaluable insight into the everyday lives of the early settlers, their experiences with Aboriginal Australians, bushrangers and general hardships of pioneering life. Correspondence covers the broad gamut of early settlement in these localities with particular reference to David Edgar's diary, Major Mitchell's explorations, letters by Ernest Sandford Jackson which include biographical notes on Rev. F. T. C. Russell; cultural and sporting activities which include the Great Western Steeple Chase, the Caledonian Society; butter factories; conservation (water and timber), local industries, such as boiling down works, shearing, dairying, horse-breeding and the ‘Farmers and Property Owners' and Producers' Association. Miscellaneous letters re life as a teacher at Grenville College, Ballarat.
Local histories and historical notes compiled by Albert Glendinning Turnbull and others include: Glenelg history; Early settlement and history of Rocklands, Yat Nat (Rocklands) notes, (incomplete), Congbool (Big Plains) notes; Coleraine history; Balmoral history; Wannon Valley notes and development of Wannon Shire; Cavendish history, with particular emphasis on history of the Scots Church; miscellaneous papers on Portland which includes bird life study, land division, recollections of pioneers; brief references to Port Fairy (a list of early ministers), Wimmera Plains, Wimmera-Portland Railway, Hamilton, Branxholme, Horsham, Apsley, Macarthur, Dartmoor, Harrow and Telangatuk.

NOTE: Adam Turnbull migrated to Tasmania in 1824. He held a number of public offices before entering the Presbyterian Ministry in 1853-54. In 1845 he purchased Mount Koroite estate in partnership with George Young. His sons Alexander and Albert Turnbull and grandson, Albert Glendinning Turnbull, (son of Alexander) were graziers in the Western District. A. G. Turnbull moved to Tyrendarra in the 1930s.
