The bluestone magazine was opened in 1878 to safely store gunpowder imported into the colony of Victoria. It has associated earth mound blast walls, tunnels, tramways, service buildings, loading dock and canal.
It was designed by the Victorian Public Works Department under the supervision of William Wardell and built by contractor George Cornwell between 1876 and 1878
The site later provided storage for other dangerous materials used in the ammunition factories close by.
