About this objectThe bluestone magazine was opened in 1878 to safely store gunpowder imported into the colony of Victoria. It has associated earth mound blast walls, tunnels, tramways, service buildings, loading dock and canal.
It was designed by the Victorian Public Works Department under the supervision of William Wardell and built by contractor George Cornwell between 1876 and 1878
The site later provided storage for other dangerous materials used in the ammunition factories close by.
This tract of 127 hectares on the banks of the Maribyrnong River was the site of the largest explosives factory in Australia at the height of World War II. The privately owned Footscray factory was acquired by the Commonwealth in 1927.
It is on the Victorian Heritage Register H1154
