Name/TitleD'Arch family : Old Melbourne Cemetery, c. 1920
About this objectA colourised photograph of, as described by Selby, "one of the finest monuments in the Cemetery", commemorating the widow, daughter and granddaughter, and son-in-law Patrick Turnbull, of Thomas D'Arch. Selby tells us that Thomas D'Arch was an Old Pioneer and surveyor, who came to Victoria with Hoddle.
A Roman column surmounted by draped urn stands on a carved pedestal. The inscriptions are recorded on the four sides of the pedestal which is enclosed by an elegant rail. More tombs and trees can be seen in the background.
The inscription reads: (144 in Selby's grave index p. 382, OPMHoM)
(1) Elizabeth, widow of the late Thomas D'Arch Esq, who died 14th April, 1871, aged 83
(2) Catherine Elizabeth, only child of Patrick & Sophia Turnbull, who died in 1853, aged 1 year and 2 months
(3) Sarah Maud D'Arch, 3rd daughter of Thomas D'Arch Esq, who died 29th May, 1902, aged 77
(4) Patrick Turnball, who died 26th February, 1870, aged 52
Sophia was Thomas D'Arch's youngest daughter who married Patrick Turnbull, a merchant, in August 1850.
Thomas D'Arch was the grandfather of Adela Breton, a notable English archaeologist and artist.
This image is attributed to Everard Studley Miller who photographed many graves and tombstones in the Old Melbourne Cemetery (established in 1837) around 1920 as part of a project led by Isaac Selby to record and commemorate all aspects of Melbourne's second cemetery (the first being at Flagstaff Hill). The RHSV holds original glass negatives and albums of the photographs from this project.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund. Selby slide #93.
