About this objectPhotograph of the table tomb placed over the remains of Evans Fawcus, with Isaac Selby standing to the right of the monument. A tripod camera, with a focussing cloth, is positioned right behind the tomb. A large tree with most of its leaves missing dominates the left of the image. More headstones, monuments and trees are in the background. The whole scene is set in a sea of long dry grass.
"An iron table, sent out from Stockton on Tees, in England, and placed over the grave by Messrs. Raleigh, Lock & Thorpe - Evans Fawcus, 7th July, 1855, aged 22. It stood under a beautiful elm tree, and was an interesting feature in the Cemetery."
(Grave Index 288, p. 391, OPMHoM)
According to newspaper articles, the iron tomb was sent by Fawcus' parents [Henry & Ann], of Stockton-on-Tees, England. They requested that his kind friends, Messrs. Raleigh, Locke, and Thorpe place this over the spot, which they have selected for his last resting place.
This image is attributed to Everard Studley Miller who photographed many graves and tombstones in the Old Melbourne Cemetery (established in 1837) around 1920 as part of a project led by Isaac Selby to record and commemorate all aspects of Melbourne's second cemetery (the first being at Flagstaff Hill). The RHSV holds original glass negatives and albums of the photographs from this project.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
