Name/TitleTreasury Building, Spring Street, Melbourne, c. 1901
About this objectThis photograph of the Treasury Building, located on the east side of Spring Street, between Treasury Place and MacArthur Street and facing down Collins Street, has been taken from Collins Street.
Constructed between 1858 and 1862, the Treasury was the first major government office built after the gold rushes. It was designed in the Renaissance Revival style by J.J. Clark, who was eighteen years old at the time! In 1876, Treasury moved to the State Government Offices nearby, and the Old Treasury building became the office of the governor and the chief secretary.
In the foreground on the left is a hansom cab and what looks like a larger four-wheeled cab. On the right of the image two men seem to be having a heated conversation.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
