Name/TitleGovernment House, Melbourne, c. 1900
About this objectThis is a typical view of Government House, the home of the Governor of Victoria, taken from the east with the belvedere tower in the centre of the image. Designed in the Victorian Period Italianate style by William Wardell, it was opened in 1876. Government House and its grounds are located next to the Royal Botanic Gardens.
A couple of figures and a hansom cab can be seen at the entrance portico to the left of the building. The plantings around the building are not as established as in GS-BCS-14, and so this slide has been given an earlier date.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
