Name/TitleSt Luke's Church, South Melbourne, painted by unknown artist, c. 1875
About this objectA coloured drawing of the church, grounds and congregation, located on the north-east corner of the intersection of Clarendon and Dorcas streets, as viewed from the opposite corner.
The architect, F. M. White, designed the church constructed in 1857, in the English Gothic style. In the late 1800s, the entrance on Clarendon Street to the left of the image was removed, and the entrance on Dorcas Street to the right of the image became the main point of entry.
The very detailed solid drawing of the church contrasts with the lively charmingly drawn congregation gathering for a Sunday service.
The second vicar, Canon R.B. Dickinson, was incumbent at St. Luke’s for 51 years, from 1856. Maybe he commissioned the artist to draw his church?
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
