Name/TitleScotch College: sports arena and chapel, c. 1940
About this objectThis photograph of Scotch College, Hawthorn, has been taken from the east, across the main sports oval, where a match is taking place, towards what is known as "The Hill", with the chapel, the large square building, on the right of the image.
Scotch College is the oldest continuing secondary school in Victoria. It was established in 1851 by Reverend James Forbes of the Presbyterian Church. The large site, in Hawthorn, was purchased in 1915 and the school moved to this, its third location, in 1926. The chapel is known as the Littlejohn Memorial Chapel, dedicated in 1936 to William Still Littlejohn, who was Principal from 1904 to 1933.
Schoolboy spectators and their bicycles are in the foreground of the image.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
