Name/TitleChrist Church, corner Denham and Church Streets, Hawthorn, c. 1900
About this objectThis is a photograph of the north facade of a bluestone Gothic style church, showing the east end of the nave to the left of the image, and a timber octagonal turret at the west end, to the right. The photograph was taken from Denham Street from which the church grounds are accessed. However, the main entrance to the church is at its west end overlooking Church Street.
Christ Church was designed in 1853 by Charles Vickers, who arrived in Australia that same year from Yorkshire, England, and who went on to design many other churches and private residences around Melbourne. Erected in 1853-4 this building is claimed to be the oldest Christian church on the southern side of the Yarra River.
The nave and east end of the church has been extended and added to since this photograph was taken.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
