About this objectThis illustration possibly reproduced from a newspaper then hand-coloured, shows the Exhibition Building looking from the south-east over the Carlton Gardens and ornamental water feature. The drawing shows the machinery annexe to the right of the main building. This illustration may have appeared in a newspaper in 1938, the 50-year anniversary of the 1888 Centennial International Exhibition.
There is a plan of the Exhibition Building and annexes at the back of Centennial International Exhibition - Melbourne - 1888-9 - Official Record, held in the rare book collection of the RHSV.
One of the many glass slides purchased from retailers or specifically made for illustrated lectures given by Isaac Selby between c. 1930 and c. 1955 to raise money for the Old Pioneers Memorial Fund.
Selby probably showed this slide during his lecture, 'Melbourne Exhibitions', at the public library on August 10th, 1932. He gave another lecture, 'Great Exhibitions of the World - With a plea for one at the Centenary of Victoria', at Independent Hall, Collins Street, on July 5th, 1949.
