Name/TitleThe Windsor to St Kilda Railway Loop Bridge, spanning St Kilda Road, St Kilda, 1857
About this objectGlass slide that depicts the railway bridge over St Kilda road and a footpath. A man is driving livestock on the road, and a man and woman are walking along the path. The railway bridge, buildings and cloudy sky are in the background.
In 1857 the St Kilda and Brighton Railway Company was authorized to run a line from Brighton to Windsor, and then by a loop across Punt Road and St Kilda Road to St Kilda Station and then on to Flinders Street. The first train on the loop line from St Kilda was on 3 December 1859, and it opened to the public ten days later. This St Kilda-Windsor railway line linked the isolated Windsor to Brighton (Bay Street) section of the Melbourne railway network to the city. The branch line fell into disuse when an alternative route was built between Windsor and Richmond stations and was closed in 1862. [Sources: Wikipedia, Victorian Heritage Database Report]
