Andrew Lemon has been honoured, becoming a Member of the Order of Australia for services to community history and the racing industry, in the Queen’s Birthday list of honours.
Andrew Lemon has written sixteen books, four of which have won prizes, in subjects ranging from local history, education, sport and biography, his most recent being The Master Gardener (2018) on L. R Garnett, a principal of Geelong Grammar and a noted garden and environmental writer for The Age.
read more...On 29 May the Heritage Committee of the RHSV made a major submission to the Heritage Council of Victoria regarding planned amendments by the City of Yarra to Design and Development Overlays covering historic strip shopping centres. The RHSV has also been lobbying individual Councillors. We become aware, whilst preparing our submission, that the same approach was being applied not just by the City of Yarra but throughout the inner and middle suburbs of Melbourne.

On behalf of the Council, the RHSV surveyed its member societies, asking their thoughts on the current state of protection for heritage. We received 113 substantial responses. But the seeds of that victory were in the contradiction between the heritage overlay that was supposed to protect it and the planning scheme which encouraged developers to put up a 40 metre tower on the site! read more...Earlier in November we held a very successful event connected to our Putting It Out There: Melbourne in the 1970s exhibition. The event was titled “This is My City: Melbourne Sharpie Subculture Scene”.
Julie Mac, a former sharpie, gave a very entertaining lecture about the history of the sharpie culture in Melbourne.
Our photo show Julie Mac surrounded by some of those at the event – a mix of old sharpies and young people intrigued by the rebel culture that was distinctly Melbourne.
read more...The RHSV is excited to announce that we were successful recently in being awarded a Museums Australia (Victoria) Roving Curator Grant. This means that MAV curator, Kitty Owens, will work with our curator, Lenore Frost on our first exhibition in 2020 which will focus on the West Melbourne swamp. Lenore will be looking at the history of the swamp from pre-European times until the present day.
read more...Our Administrator, Amy Clay, is leaving at Christmas to have her third baby – congratulations Amy.
We have been fortunate to recruit Pankaj Sirwani, to replace Amy whilst she is on parental leave. Pankaj came to Melbourne to complete his master’s degree in Accounting and Financial Management at La Trobe University. Before this he completed his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Pune in India. Pankaj will overlap with Amy for one week before Christmas and then he’ll fly solo from the 7th of January when we return from our Christmas break.
