Description
ECHUCA – on the Murray – 1884
Fred Falkland-Pritchard is such a gifted liar that he believes his own tall stories. Bob is the most uncivilised bushman you’ll ever meet. What happens when they get together with Tom Collins (the imperfect narrator from Such is Life) and Fred’s earnestly liberal young wife?
Furphy with his lightest touch is Furphy at his most confronting. From his amiable, comic narrative comes challenging insights into death, marriage, truth and deceit, and brutalising encounters between a new Australian society and the indigenous culture of the Aborigines.
The Buln Buln and The Brolga was written for easy reading. But for those who like to delve below the surface, Frances Devlin Glass’s masterful annotations are an enjoyable way into a multitude of unexpected treats.
Joseph Furphy (pen name Tom Collins) was born at Yering, Victoria, in 1843. He wrote actively in the 1890s, breaking ground that European modernists would come to in later decades. He worked as a farmer in Victoria, a bullocky in NSW, and at his brother’s foundry in Shepparton, where they made Furphy tanks. He died in W.A. in 1912.
