Description
SECOND HAND BOOK – EX-LIBRARY
This is a history of the township and district of Heathcote and its local government body, the Shire of McIvor. Heathcote is situated 110 kilometres from Melbourne, on the road to Bendigo via Kilmore.
The wheel has turned full circle at Heathcote. After Major Sir Thomas Mitchell led the first party of explorers through the district in 1836, the country was taken up by pastoralists who occupied large leasehold runs and stocked them with sheep.
Today, almost a century and a half after the first Europeans entered the district, sheep raising and wool production are the two most important industries, as they were before the gold was found in McIvor Creek, and the population of the Shire stands at about 2300, men, women and children.
