“In Victoria there are three national parks of area exceeding one hundred square miles – Wyperfeld in the Southern Mallee, Wilson’s Promontory in the south-east of the State and the Little Desert in the central west. All three are notable for the richness and variety of wildflowers that have been discovered within their boundaries.

Wilson’s Promontory has been studied by botanists and field naturalists for so long and so intensively that very few additions to the list of its vascular flora (the ferns and flowering plants) can be expected in the future despite the recent inclusion of several off-shore islands and the 17,900 acres of the southern part of the Yanakie Isthmus.

From my own observations during occasional rambles on the isthmus I do not anticipate many additional records of native plants from the new sector of the Park although I feel sure that hitherto unrecorded alien plants will be found – the kind of species introduced by cattle which have grazed the area for more than a century.

With this qualification in mind and an awareness that plant communities are subject to continuous change, the book may be accepted as an accurate record of every plant species known to have been discovered on the Promontory up to the present time.
