This book as instigated by Margaret Howes, the great grand daughter of Edward Duckett in Victoria. Anne and Robin Bailey who have carried out the major research and writing of the book are professional historians and genealogists; their most recent book is a A Windy Morn of Matlock, a history of a Victorian mountain goldfield.

The Golden Horseshoe provides the background genealogy of the Duckett family in Yorkshire, ad traces the early life of Edward Duckett in Melbourne in the Horse Bazaars.

His early land dealings are covered and also the development of his extensive business interests

After his death in 1902, the business was continued and expanded y four of his sons. It survived the Great Depression and the Second World War, but was finally closed on the death of his last surviving son in 1960. On the closure of the business, the business records dating back almost to its foundation were deposited in the University of Melbourne Archives. These records have been used to provide a unique glimpse into business life in Melbourne in the nineteenth century, and up unto the Second World War. The book also includes fascinating reminiscences from members of the Duckett family.
