Mount of gold by James G. Baxter (Second Hand book)

SECOND HAND BOOK – EX LIBRARY

When George Egerton rode away from the infant settlement of Geelong in the early days of 1839, it is extremely unlikely that he would have supposed that his name would be perpetuated by a cluster of bush covered hills in the interior of the Port Phillip colony.  It is even less likely that he could have foreseen that the sheep run he was seeking would one day contain within its boundaries, one of the richest and longest worked gold fields in the yet to be proclaimed state of Victoria.  In time to come, Egerton was to have his name given to this group of hills, the highest of which truly became a Mount of Gold.
