Description
Visitors to the Bass District will find it to have great natural beauty and historic interest. The recorded history of our state began in 1798 when George Bass discovered Western Port. The second attempt to establish permanent settlement in what is now Victoria occurred at Corinella in 1826, and Victoria’s third permanent settlement was established on the Bass River shortly after the founding of Melbourne in 1858.
The Bass Valley Historical Society has prepared this booklet to help you to find and understand the areas of special scenic and historic interest. The information has been set out as if the visitor is travelling south along the Bass Highway, but of course can be quite easily used by those who approach from the other direction. The country through which you will travel has been shaped by a combination of the forces of nature and the hand of man.
