Viewed from the shore, Port Philip Heads appear to afford ample room for the safe navigation of vessels proceeding to and from the ports of Melbourne and Geelong. However, more than one hundred incidents have occurred in the narrow stretch of sea, due largely to the fact that, although the distance between Points Lonsdale and Nepean is about two kilometres, the reefs projecting from them reduce the navigable channel to about one kilometre.
The Lonsdale reef dries at half tide, and projects about 500 metres south-east from Point Lonsdale. For 200 metres outside the dry reef, in the same direction, are several rocky patches with only two to four metres of water over them. At about 200 metres from Point Lonsdale, the reef is intersected by a channel carrying one and a half metres at low water, used by some fishing craft in fine weather.
The Point Nepean reef at the eastern head of the entrance, is dry at low water for about 700 metres. On its outer end is a rock about six metres in diameter with about two metres of water over it, known as the Corsair Rock, the cause of numerous wrecks and strandings.
