Taming the Wilderness: One Family’s Contribution to Irrigation in Australia by A.E. Lawrence (Second Hand)

SECOND HAND BOOK

The history of Australia is closely intertwined with the history of irrigation, so vital to the opening of this vast continent. Four first-generation Australians, John, Samuel and Herbert Davies and their cousin, T.N. Flight, played a significant role in the story of irrigation in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. Although this book is primarily the tory of the senior partner of the firm of Davies Brothers, John Herbert, and his family, it is is a tribute to the many early contractors (generally unknown and unsung) who were so largely responsible for Australia’s development as a productive and prosperous country.

The author, a son-in-law of J.H. Davies, has told the story against the background of the gold rushes and the many ups and downs of the history of the day. It is a story of human interest, hard living and hard work, a story of success for one family and for Australia.
