Andrew Lemon: ‘Fifty years (more or less) as a professional historian: some reflections on surviving outside the academy’

Andrew Lemon AM, FRHSV is a practising professional historian, a past president of the Royal Historical Society and throughout the 1990s, he was Victorian Editor of the Victorian Historical Journal. He is a former board member of the State Library of Victoria and of the Heritage Council and is a member of the Professional Historians Association (Vic & Tas). After working initially as an archivist, Andrew has published widely from local history and school history to shipwrecks, biography and his three volume History of Australian Thoroughbred Racing. He has won several book awards and in 2012 was a John H. Daniels Fellow at the National Sporting Library and Museum in Virginia. He holds the degrees of BA (Hons), MA, and Doctor of Letters, all from the University of Melbourne. Last year he published his debut historical novel, The Pebbled Beach at Pentecost, based on a true colonial story.
