Description
Gold made a large contribution to Gippsland’s development. The difference, however, between Gippsland goldfields and those to the west was that their remoteness meant they would only have a limited life. The measure of success here was not in the long-term survival of the mountain townships but in development of service towns on the plains, such as Sale, which grew into major centres. These towns were the foundation of Gippslands prosperity and developed as a direct result of the discovery of gold in the nearby mountains.
